The demand for an airport in Meerut has been longstanding, but the project has faced repeated delays due to issues related to land acquisition and escalating project costs. Despite earlier announcements, including one by former Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh, the airport has yet to materialize, frustrating local residents and stakeholders.

In a renewed push, BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal met with Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, who assured that the Ministry of Civil Aviation is ready to operationalise the airport once the Uttar Pradesh government fulfils the land acquisition requirements. As of October 2023, the project remains stalled, awaiting final approval for land transfer from the state government.

In 2025, to expand the Partapur airstrip in Meerut, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested land from the Uttar Pradesh government to enable the operation of 72-seater aircraft. AAI has sought the acquisition of 96.14 acres of land and the removal of existing obstacles. In response, the state government has asked the district administration to provide details regarding the associated costs. The goal is to launch air services in Meerut under the UDAN scheme.

AAI Letter to UP Government- AAI Chairman Vipin Kumar has once again written to the Uttar Pradesh government. In the letter, he stated that AAI had already prepared and submitted a master plan for all three phases of airport development to the state government. The plan outlines the land requirements for each phase. In the first phase, the proposal is to expand the existing airstrip and begin operations of 72-seater aircraft connecting multiple cities.

For this initial phase, he has requested the acquisition and handover of 96.14 acres of land reserved for the airport, in addition to the existing 44.45 acres of the current airstrip. He has also urged the state government to remove the obstacles highlighted in the master plan, including power lines and other infrastructural barriers.

Government Letter- Special Secretary of the Civil Aviation Department, Ishan Pratap Singh, has requested the district administration to provide details of the financial burden involved in acquiring the land required for all three phases of the airstrip expansion, as outlined in the master plan submitted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

For small planes to fly from Meerut, the length of the runway should be 1800 meters and the width 30 meters. Currently, the width of the runway is 23 meters, and its length is 1,500 meters. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) had stated the need for land for runway expansion. Along with government departments, a total of 86 acres of land of the forest department is to be transferred to AIA. Apart from this, 141 acres of land are needed, of which 46.53 acres of land belong to the Meerut Development Authority.

This land, which was acquired years ago, has not yet been transferred to the name of the Civil Aviation Department. For about a year, the government, administration and MEDA had demanded Rs 24 crore for 46.53 acres of land for the construction of 66 runways. On the demand for interest waiver by the Civil Aviation Department, it was reduced to Rs 14.58 crore in public interest. The government has approved giving only Rs 6.69 crore.

Now, the hope for air flights from Meerut has increased. The government has released Rs 6.69 crore for runway expansion. This money will be transferred to Meerut Vikas Pradhikaran by the DM. Then the land will be handed over to the Civil Aviation Department by the authority. This is considered a major action.
