St. Joseph’s Cathedral
St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Meerut is one of the oldest and most historic churches in the city — originally built in 1834 by Begum Sumru of Sardhana. Over time it was enlarged and renovated (notably in 1864, with its belfry added in 1872), and it even has old benches modified during colonial times so that British soldiers could keep rifles — a silent reminder of its 1857-era heritage. Sardhana Chruch
Basilica of Our Lady of Graces, Sardhana was built by Begum Samru — the only Catholic ruler in India — and consecrated in 1822 (construction began around 1809–1820). Its design was by Italian architect Antonio Reghellini, using marble and a mix of European (domes, Roman-style) and subtle oriental architectural influences.
