Rapid and Meerut Metro trains will run together in June

In a groundbreaking development, Namo Bharat—the semi-high-speed rail network connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut—will soon share its infrastructure with the upcoming Meerut Metro. This pioneering integration marks a first in India and is set to revolutionise the public transportation system by offering a seamless, efficient, and faster travel experience across the region.

This shared infrastructure approach, enabled by cutting-edge signalling technology and optimized scheduling, aims to significantly improve connectivity between Delhi and Meerut, benefitting lakhs of daily commuters. By utilizing the same tracks, the Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro systems will provide smooth, safe, and convenient transit options across urban and suburban areas.

High-Speed Meets Metro Efficiency

Namo Bharat trains operate at a speed of 160 kmph and currently run between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South. The Meerut Metro, designed as India’s fastest metro system with a top speed of 120 kmph, will cover a 23-km corridor with 13 stations between Meerut South and Modipuram Depot.

Once fully operational, the 82-km Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut corridor will offer Namo Bharat services at a 10-minute frequency (currently 15 minutes), while Meerut Metro trains will run every 7 minutes.

Seamless Integration with Advanced Technology

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is managing the operations of both systems through a centralised Operations Control Centre (OCC). For the first time globally, NCRTC has implemented the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level-2 over an LTE backbone. This system integrates Automatic Train Protection (ATP), Automatic Train Supervision (ATS), and Platform Screen Doors (PSD) for enhanced safety and operational precision.

  • ATP ensures compliance with speed limits and signal protocols.
  • ATS oversees punctuality and real-time control.
  • PSD, synced with ETCS, enhances passenger safety at stations.

Commuter-Friendly Infrastructure

Special attention has been given to station design, particularly at key interchange points such as Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. Island platforms have been constructed at these stations to facilitate easy transfers—trains travelling in the same direction will arrive on opposite sides of the same platform, eliminating the need for staircases or lifts.

For example, a commuter travelling from Modinagar North to Meerut North can take a Namo Bharat train to Begumpul and then switch to the Meerut Metro from the same platform. A single integrated ticket will cover the entire journey, eliminating the need for separate bookings.

Integrated Ticketing and Digital Access

Ticketing options include:

  • Physical ticket counters
  • Vending machines (accepting cash, cards, and UPI)
  • The Namo Bharat Connect mobile app, which also features a journey planner

In addition, integrated ticketing with DMRC (Delhi Metro) and IRCTC is being enabled. Soon, Namo Bharat Tickets and Delhi Metro Tickets will be available via mobile apps and IRCTC’s digital platform.

Train Features and Design

Namo Bharat trains comprise six coaches:

  • First coach: Premium class
  • Second coach: Reserved for women

Meerut Metro trains consist of three coaches, each with reserved seating for women, senior citizens, and differently-abled passengers.

To help passengers easily differentiate between the two services:

  • Namo Bharat: Maroon stripes with Tricolour on the front
  • Meerut Metro: Parrot green stripes with distinctive door markings

Comprehensive Connectivity

The 82-km corridor includes 16 Namo Bharat stations. Meerut Metro’s 23-km route features 13 stations:

  • Shared Stations (Namo Bharat + Metro): Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, Modipuram
  • Metro-only Stations: Partapur, Rithani, Brahmapuri, Meerut Central (underground), Bhaisali (underground), MES Colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram Depot

Of the 13 Meerut Metro stations, three—Meerut Central, Bhaisali, and Begumpul—are underground, while others are elevated. Modipuram Depot is an at-grade station.

To support multimodal integration, these stations are being connected to Indian Railways, local metro systems, and bus depots wherever feasible. Stations such as Meerut South, Begumpul, and Modipuram have been specially designed to make switching between modes of transport effortless.

This integrated transport model is expected to set a precedent for future urban mobility projects across India, promising faster commutes, greater convenience, and a modernized travel experience for all.
