History of Meerut Metro Project

Proposal and its submission (2010-2016)- In early 2010, the metro train project of Meerut and RRTS was proposed by the government of India and the Uttar Pradesh State Government. The metro train is needed in Meerut due to the rising population, traffic, and demand in the City. It was also in demand due to its location near NCR. Therefore, the preliminary assessment of the metro project was done by RITES in June 2015, and the same was submitted to the Indian Government in June 2016.

Connectivity of Metro (2017)- In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) started the project. The metro line was initially planned to have 11 stations from Partapur to Modipuram, but to connect the boundary area of Meerut, it was extended to 13 stations from Meerut South to Modipuram Depot.

Foundation Stone and Starting of Construction (2019)- On 8th March 2019, PM Narendra Modi marked the initiation of the project with the foundation stone, along with the Delhi-Meerut RRTS project. Construction of both projects began in June of the same year. Now, both these projects are scheduled to be completed and started by or before October 2025.

Re-bidding due to clash in Galwan Valley (2020)- In 2020, a clash occurred in Galwan Valley between the Indian and Chinese armies, so the Indian government withdrew the bid with the Chinese company associated with manufacturing the trains of the metro. Because of this, a ri-bidding was done by the NCRTC and Bombardier Transportation. On 7th May 2024, the ri-bidding process was won and acquired by Alstom.

Manufacturing of Metro- Currently, the trains are manufactured at Alstom’s plant in Savil, Gujarat. The company will supply 210 coaches for 30 trains, each with 3 coaches.

1st train set (2024)- The first train set of the metro was delivered by Alstom to the NCRTC on 16th Feb 2024.

1st Trail Run in Meerut (2025)- On 12 January 2025, the first trial run of Meerut Metro was conducted in Meerut from Meerut South Station to Meerut Central Station. As of today, the project are on the right track to be completed by October 2025.

This phase has been integrated with the Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), where both Namo Bharat trains and Meerut Metro will share the same tracks. While the RRTS will connect commuters all the way to Delhi, the metro service will be limited within the city, covering the stretch between Modipuram and Bhudbaral.

For the upcoming phases, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being revised. Initially, the second corridor was proposed from Sharadhapuri Phase-II to Gokulpur village via Hapur Adda Crossing. However, due to new planning and city requirements, the route is now being reconsidered to start from Begumpul and extend towards Gokulpur or beyond. Additionally, a third corridor has been proposed from Football Chowk to Baghpat Road Flyover, which reflects the growing vision to expand metro connectivity across key parts of Meerut city.
