The company was founded on 25 Nov 2013, Monday, and serves the area of Uttar Pradesh. Sushil Kumar is the IRSE Managing Director of the UPMRC. The company’s ownership is with the Government of India and the Government of UP with a 50-50% stake on each side.
The UPMRC company fully operates the Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur Metro. The Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, and Bareilly Metro are proposed by UPMRC. The Noida Metro is not operated by UPMRC but it is operated by a separate company Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC). Similarly, the Meerut Metro and Delhi Meerut RRTS are located in UP but they are not operated by UPMRC and are instead operated by the National Capital Region Trasport Corporation (NCRTC).

History of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited
- The Predecessor of UPMRC is Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC).
- The LMRC was formed as a special purpose vehicle (SPV), by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 2013 to build and operate the Lucknow Metro.
- The formation of LMRC was formally approved by the cabinet of Uttar Pradesh Government in June 2013.
- The SPV was incorporated under the Companies Act, 1956 on 25 Nov 2013, Monday and got the commencement of the business certificate on 24 December 2013.
- The Authorised Capital of the company was decided to be Rs. 2000 crore (US$250 million.)
- In 2016, to speed up clearance processes for Lucknow Metro, LMRC became a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of UP.
- In 2017, the Lucknow Metro was inaugurated and opened to the public.
- In 2018, LMRC was reconstituted to cover and implement other metro projects in the state and renamed as Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation.
- In 2021, the Kanpur Metro was open to the public, this was the fastest-built and commissioned metro system in the world built in 24 months.
- On 5th March 2024, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the priority corridor of the Agra Metro.
Operational Systems of UPMRCL
In Uttar Pradesh, there are four operational systems in the state: Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida Metro, and Delhi Meerut RRTS. The Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur Metro are operated by UPMRC and the other two, Noida Metro and Delhi Meerut RRTS, are operated by NMRC (Aqua Line) and NCRTC, respectively. Apart from this, the Noida Blue Line and Ghaziabad Blue Line are also there which are part of Delhi Metro and operated by DMRC.

Apart from the metro train project in UP, the UPMRC also provides other services, which are as follows-
- Along with operating the metro, the UPMRC also provides consultancy services for metro projects in Uttar Pradesh.
- The UPMRC, in association with RITES, has prepared Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the metro in various cities of Uttar Pradesh.
- The UPMRC is also currently working as an interim consultant for the implementation of the Agra, Praygraj, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur Metro Project.
- Along with this number of ropeway projects are also under the implementation stage including the Varanasi Ropeway Project.
