The Meerut Metro Project has been in the pipeline since 2016, when Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES) prepared and submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Uttar Pradesh state government. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8th March 2019, alongside the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). Construction began in June 2019 and is scheduled for completion ahead of the June 2025 deadline.
Designed to serve Meerut City in Uttar Pradesh, the metro project is being implemented in two phases:
Phase 1: From Meerut South to Modipuram, covering 13 stations
Phase 2: Planned extension from Shradhapuri Phase II to Jagriti Vihar, encompassing 12 stations
