On the occasion of World Environment Day, NCRTC has launched a special Electric Bike Taxi Service at the Meerut South Namo Bharat Station. This is the first service of its kind in the region – run by women, for women. All the bikes will be driven by trained female riders and will only serve female passengers.
The service has started from the Parking Zone near Gate No. 1 of Meerut South Station, which has the highest number of passengers among all Namo Bharat stations. In the beginning, about 10 electric bikes will run during busy hours. These bikes will provide last-mile transport within a 5 km area at a very low fare.
This new service is a step by NCRTC to support women who often struggle due to a lack of safe and easy transport, especially when travelling with children, the elderly, or luggage. It ensures a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly option for female Namo Bharat commuters.
NCRTC plans to expand this service to more Namo Bharat stations after reviewing feedback and performance.
Efforts Toward Better and Greener Travel
NCRTC is working hard to make travel easier and more comfortable for Namo Bharat passengers. They have partnered with Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) to run air-conditioned electric buses on different routes in Delhi. These buses now connect stations like New Ashok Nagar and Anand Vihar.
Other last-mile transport services like e-rickshaws and Rapido bike taxis are also available at several stations in Ghaziabad.
NCRTC is also focusing on green and eco-friendly projects like:
- Tree plantation drives (e.g., at Duhai Depot)
- Solar power systems on station roofs and depot buildings
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Regenerative braking and push-button doors in Namo Bharat trains
On World Environment Day, NCRTC also spoke to passengers about how Namo Bharat trains help protect the environment. A fun quiz session was held, and many people took part with great excitement. This women-only bike taxi initiative is another important step toward making transport in India not just faster, but also smarter, safer, and greener.
